DirecTV playing hardball with signal pirates

Tampering with satellite television service can lead to towering court judgments and costly legal representation. Even the appearance of it can have monetary consequences.

In the last two years, satellite television giant DirecTV has filed federal lawsuits against 25,000 people nationally for tapping its signal without paying its monthly fee. The suits included 152 defendants in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania and dozens of regional residents.

According to district court documents, at least eight people in the federal courthouse in Scranton were slapped with $10,000 judgments for failure to answer DirecTV’s legal complaints.

Ouch! See what can happen? Don’t pirate satellite signals… or at least don’t do it in a way that’s going to lead to something like this!
